Q&A
When did you know you wanted to do hair? When I knew I wanted to do hair, it was an epiphany for me. I had never really considered it as a career I would love. I decided to enroll in cosmetology school about 3 days before the semester started. I was lucky to find my calling by mistake. It was the best spur-of-the-moment decision I have ever made.
How would you describe your approach to doing hair color? Having done most of my colour training in Los Angeles, my approach to designing colour is believability, first and foremost. I don’t like using words like natural or subtle, because that suggests it won’t be noticed. I like doing high impact colour that looks as though Mother Nature had a hand in it. I feel that this approach gives my clients the most pleasing results.
What inspires your creativity? The thing that inspired my creativity the most is natural femininity. The looks of yesteryear are the thing that drives me the most. The Marilyn Monroes, the Farrah Fawcetts, and the Bridgette Bardots of the world. I look to the past to find the style of tomorrow.
What advice would you give to someone considering coloring their hair for the first time? How do you customize a hair color service for each and every client? The way I customize my colour services for each client is to formulate their colour closely to their natural level. Instead of applying the same shades of blondes to every one that walks in, I like to work around what suits, not only, their colouring, but also their lifestyle. I don’t want a client to be dreading roots. I like doing colour that grows out beautifully.
What celebrity always has great hair? Gwen Stefani always has amazing hairstyles and colours. Even though she always stays in the platinum levels….the subtle changes of hues make all the difference, from that silvery Jean Harlow Platinum, to those beautiful lavender blondes, she knows how to work it. From cuts to colour to upstyles…she always has it together.
What's your approach to returning hair color clients? My approach to retunring colour clients always begins with how do they feel about their colour on the day they return to have it touched up? Have they been hiding under a hat for the past two weeks? Or do they feel like they could go another month before feeling like it needs to be redone. I want my clients to love their colour from the day they leave to the day they return.
Describe your personal style: My personal style is a blend of everything. I love the look of Italian cut loafers paired with torn jeans and a graphic tee with a long tuxedo style topcoat. I am equally comfortable in my chuck taylors and jeans and tee. I like taking pieces of all styles…. Rock and roll….highfashion….guy next door… and rolling them all into one thing that is me. The only rule I have is ONLY black and white! lol |
